When it comes to hiking, there is no shortage of trails and nature areas in the Green Bay area. Rivers, forests, prairies, unique geological features, and, of course, the bay all make Brown County an outdoors wonderland. There are plenty of popular trails you shouldn’t sleep on—Baird Creek, Reforestation Camp, the East River and Fox River trails, and Fonferek’s Glen, to name a few favorites—but if you’re looking to explore somewhere that’s a little less crowded, or simply want to discover your new favorite trail, there are some hidden gems waiting to be discovered!

Red Banks Alvar State Natural Area

If you’ve never heard of an alvar before, you’re not alone. This rare ecosystem is found in only a handful of places around the world, and one of those places happens to be right here in Brown County. Red Banks Alvar features ancient limestone bedrock, thin soils, scattered oak trees, and a fascinating mix of plant and animal life that has survived since the post-glacial era. You might feel like you’ve landed on an alien planet as you walk through a landscape of exposed rock surfaces, open savanna-like areas, and dramatic views along the escarpment.

You could also catch a glimpse of some of the twenty different species of butterflies that reside in the old-growth oak savanna—and did we mention the snails? The area also hosts one of the most diverse land snail communities known in the Midwest, and is one of the most important areas in Wisconsin for snails. Just remember, Red Banks Alvar is a State Natural Area, which means there are no restrooms, picnic areas, or other facilities, so come prepared to be one with the snails (and the rest of nature).

Hilly Haven Golf Course

No, we’re not suggesting you count 18 holes of golf as a hike, but Hilly Haven Golf Course offers more than just golf! Enjoy their network of well-maintained trails, suitable for a variety of skill levels, that wind through rolling terrain and wooded areas, just minutes from De Pere. Dogs are welcome during daylight hours, and if you work up an appetite while you’re enjoying the views, the clubhouse bar and grill is nearby for a post-hike meal.

Ken Euers Nature Area

One of the few places in Green Bay where you can experience the bay shoreline from land, Ken Euers Nature Area offers a unique blend of wetlands, marshes, and open-water views. The trails also provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching. Ongoing restoration efforts have helped improve wildlife habitat throughout the area, making it an increasingly popular destination for nature lovers. Bring your binoculars—you never know what feathered visitors might be passing through (like 2023’s mega-rare roseate spoonbill!).

Neshota Park

Tucked away in the southeastern corner of Brown County, Neshota Park often flies under the radar despite offering nearly six miles of trails. Here you’ll find well-marked trails along river valleys, wooded hills, and winding riverbanks, which will have you feeling far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. The park also features an enclosed shelter building, complete with cooking facilities and a fireplace, that can be rented for special events.

Sensiba Wildlife Area

While many local hikes follow the Fox River or East River, Sensiba Wildlife Area offers some alternative river views. Enjoy beautiful waterfront scenery and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities along the north side of the Suamico River and the bay of Green Bay.

The area is also designated as an Important Bird Area, meaning it provides critical habitat for a variety of bird species. Several designated birdwatching spots can be found throughout the property, making this a must-visit destination for birders.

West Side Railroad Trail

Sometimes a great hike doesn't require heading deep into the woods. The West Side Railroad Trail follows a former rail corridor across Green Bay's west side, offering a paved, wheelchair-accessible route that's perfect for a casual hike, walk, or bike ride.

At 1.5 miles long, it's an easy option for families or anyone looking to enjoy some fresh air without committing to a lengthy trek. The tree-lined pathway provides a pleasant green buffer from the surrounding city, and cyclists will appreciate the bicycle repair station located along the trail.
